Coach Vincent Abiwu has labeled the inclusion of Dreams FC’s goalkeeper in Carlos Queiroz’s 23-man squad for the upcoming friendly against Mexico on May 22, 2026, as a “terrible decision.”
Abiwu argued that the goalkeeper had no business joining the national side, asserting that the player failed to meet any of the necessary criteria for a call-up.
The squad features a blend of local talent, debutants, and returning players such as Majeed Ashimeru and Felix Afena-Gyan.
However, several pillars of the team, including Thomas Partey and Jordan Ayew, were omitted as the fixture falls outside the FIFA international window.
The roster includes six local-based players and new faces like Paul Reverson (Ajax FC) and Augustine Boakye. Among them was Gideon Asieko of Dreams FC, who has since been replaced following the initial announcement.
Coach Abiwu maintained that the selection of Asieko was a “horrible decision” that should never have occurred, suggesting that several superior goalkeepers were overlooked.
He further noted that the goalkeeping department has been a consistent weakness for the team over the years—an area he believes requires an urgent review.
Critiquing the technical team’s judgment, Coach Abio stated:“The one in charge of selecting the goalkeeper got it wrong because he had no special qualities. He is just a regular goalkeeper. Throughout the season, he was not a regular material. The majority of the call-ups were spot on, but we have ignored the goalkeeping area, and the trainer must be up and doing.”
He said while the general selection of outfield players was acceptable, the goalkeeping choice remained a major flaw. “On the playing surface, the call-up was fair, but that goalkeeping area was terrible,” he added.
