The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed its support for President John Dramani Mahama’s proposal to introduce a low-cost housing scheme for public sector employees, to be delivered in collaboration with Organised Labour and various financial institutions.
In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Mr Philimon Gyapong, the Assistant National Public Relations Officer for the association, remarked that healthcare professionals and educators are keen to access better living conditions whilst dedicated to their national service.
He observed that the primary challenge facing such initiatives is often the distance between housing developments and places of employment.
Consequently, he urged the government to acquire land in more central locations to ensure the scheme offers genuine value and effectively enhances the daily lives of workers.
Mr Gyapong further advocated for a corresponding increase in salaries, arguing that improved remuneration would make mortgage repayments more sustainable and allow participants to achieve full home ownership within a 15 to 20-year timeframe.
He emphasised that it is essential for civil servants to conclude their financial obligations before retirement to avoid further economic strain in later life.
Additionally, the association called upon the current administration to prioritise the completion of as many residential units as possible during its term.
This proactive approach is deemed necessary to prevent the project from being abandoned by future governments, a common occurrence following shifts in the political landscape.
