The Greater Accra Regional Zongo Caucus Coordinator and aspirant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Caucus Coordinator role, Ismaila Ali Horoya, has urged the party to reconsider the scheduling of its upcoming branch elections.
He noted that the current dates coincide with both the Hajj pilgrimage and the World Cup, which he believes could disrupt the electoral process.
While Mr Horoya previously raised these concerns during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the majority voted to maintain the original timeline.
Despite this, he continues to advocate for a reschedule, expressing concern that proceeding as planned could undermine the stability and future success of the NDC if branch-level participation is compromised.
He emphasised that many potential voters and candidates are personally involved in these external events.
In an appeal for the party leadership to revisit the decision, Mr Horoya stated: “I am pleading with them to take a second look at it. I had raised the issue at NEC because I am a member, but the majority carried the votes. However, I am on my knees and appealing to the NDC to take a look at it. I know NEC has taken its decision, but they should take a second look. A lot of the votes are from the Zongo communities and the majority of them are Muslims who are participating in the Hajj. I was at the Hajj Village recently and heard some individuals complaining that they were embarking on this pilgrimage and will miss the branch elections. These individuals I am talking about are executives. They did not see me, but I heard them complain about the issue.”
Regarding the World Cup, he warned that the tournament poses a logistical risk to the party’s internal structure.
He cautioned that if newly elected officials travel for the event and subsequently remain abroad, it would create a leadership vacuum within the branches.
To mitigate these risks, Mr Horoya advised the party to wait until the conclusion of both the pilgrimage and the World Cup before holding the polls. Speaking during an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he formally called on the party leadership to postpone the branch elections until July.
