Afenyo-Markin Slams BoG’s 0.75% MoMo Transfer Fee as “E-Levy in disguise

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has taken the Bank of Ghana to task over a new 0.75% charge on transfers from bank accounts to mobile money wallets, describing it as a backdoor return of the repealed E-Levy.

Raising the issue on the floor of Parliament in the presence of the Finance Minister, Hon. Afenyo-Markin said the central bank’s directive contradicts government’s decision to abolish the E-Levy.

“I want to bring to the attention of the house, especially since the Finance Minister is here,” he said. “This announcement by Bank of Ghana of charging zero point seven five percent when somebody transfers money from his bank account into his mobile money wallet.”

The Minority Leader reminded the House that government had “decided to rebuild the E-Levy law,” arguing that the BoG fee effectively reinstates the same levy under a different name.

“If the Finance Minister may recall, his government decided to rebuild the E-Levy law and now Bank of Ghana is introducing the E-Levy again,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

The matter came up during parliamentary proceedings, with the Speaker engaging the Minority Leader on the concerns raised.
