Weija plant technical hitch triggers water shortages across Western Accra

May 14, 2026

The Weija Water Treatment Plant is currently grappling with technical challenges, leading to widespread water supply interruptions across several communities in Western Accra.

Ghana Water Ltd confirmed the development in a statement issued on 13th May 2026, noting that the situation has severely impacted both the production and distribution of water to a significant portion of the capital.

Residents in numerous suburbs, including Dansoman, Mamprobi, Korle-bu, and Achimota, are expected to experience low pressure or erratic supply while the issue persists.

According to the utility provider, engineers and technical teams have been deployed and are “working assiduously to rectify the challenges and restore normal water supply as early as practicable”.

The disruptions also extend to areas such as La Paz, MacCarthy Hill, Gbawe, and Mallam, alongside surrounding communities that rely on the Weija plant’s output.

While work continues on-site, the company has urged consumers to be prudent with their current reserves, advising them to “store water anytime there is flow in their communities to help manage the temporal disruption”.
For essential service providers within the affected zones, Ghana Water Ltd has recommended liaising with Assembly Members or contacting the GWL Call Centre for tailored assistance.

Management expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to the public, stating that they “sincerely apologize to affected customers for the inconvenience caused” and are appealing for “calm and cooperation while efforts are underway to resolve the challenge”.

Regular updates are expected to be provided via the company’s official social media handles as the technical teams progress with the repairs.
