A powerful tidal wave struck the coastal community of Moree in the Central Region’s Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District early on Sunday morning, destroying 13 houses and leaving over 80 residents homeless.
The Central Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed the incident occurred around 03:00, reporting that whilst property and livelihoods were severely disrupted, there were no casualties.
A joint response team comprising NADMO, National Security, the Ghana Police Service, and the District Assembly prioritised safeguarding lives and property, subsequently conducting rapid assessments and arranging temporary shelter for the displaced.
Central Regional NADMO Director, Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood, expressed sympathy for the victims and assured them that support measures are underway.
However, with the sea remaining rough, officials have urged residents to stay calm whilst safety efforts are intensified.
This disaster underscores the recurring coastal erosion and tidal hazards plaguing the Central Region.
In response, local authorities, disaster management officials, and affected residents have called for urgent relief and long-term interventions, including coastal protection infrastructure and public education to mitigate future risks. Relief efforts and damage assessments remain ongoing.
