Railway Workers’ Union threatens industrial action over 11 months of unpaid salaries

May 20, 2026

The Railway Workers’ Union has threatened to embark on industrial action if the government fails to settle 11 months of outstanding salary arrears by 31 May 2026.

According to the union, repeated assurances from the Ministry of Transport following an earlier protest in March have yielded no meaningful outcome, leaving workers frustrated and financially burdened.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, 19 May, the union’s General Secretary, Benjamin Essuman, accused authorities of unlawfully withholding workers’ salaries and warned that the continued delays are severely affecting the livelihoods of members.

Mr Essuman explained that although part of the arrears covering October 2024 to May 2025 has been paid, workers are still owed salaries from June 2025 to April 2026.

“We demand the immediate settlement of the 11 months’ salary arrears from June 2025 to April 2026. While we acknowledge the payment of eight months’ salary arrears from October 2024 to May 2025, the prolonged delay in salary payments amounts to the unlawful withholding of earned wages, economic hardship on workers’ livelihoods, and a violation of fundamental conditions of employment,” he stated.

He stressed that members are prepared to pursue every legal avenue available should the government fail to meet their demands by the end of the month.
