Minority Levels Six Charges at Government as Parliament Reconvenes

The Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, delivered the Minority’s welcome address today on behalf of the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, painting a grim picture of Ghana’s state of affairs as Parliament resumed for the second meeting of the second session.

Addressing Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Asokwa MP welcomed colleagues back to the Chamber but stated that national life during the recess had been marked by failure, scandal, and the deepening suffering of millions of Ghanaians.

She remarked that “Parliament sits in the middle of the nation’s life. And the life of this nation in the weeks just past has been a story of failure.”

Speaking for the Minority, Appiagyei levelled six accusations against the government.

These included historic financial losses at the Bank of Ghana, the return of the “Dumsor” power crisis despite government campaign promises to end it, and a crackdown on free speech where armed officers were allegedly sent to arrest citizens for expressing dissent.

She defended the Minority’s sharp critique as a constitutional necessity rather than mere political posturing. She told the House that “These are not opposition allegations,” adding that “We do so because when the executive fails, parliament must speak. When the government will not answer, this House must ask. When power is abused, it is our duty to say so clearly and without apology.”

Concluding her address, she noted that the Minority was speaking through the Chamber “to greet the people of Ghana, the suffering owners of this democracy in whose name we all sit here.”
