Parliament Collaborating with Government Following Arrest of MP in Amsterdam – Speaker

May 21, 2026
Bagbin-Speaker-of-Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, has confirmed the arrest and detention of Asante Akyem North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, in Amsterdam.

Addressing Members of Parliament at the opening of the second meeting of the second session, Bagbin described the development as regrettable and assured the House that Parliament is collaborating with the government to secure a just outcome.

“As you’ve been told it’s regrettable that one of the members of this House is alleged to be on the wrong side of the law,” Bagbin stated, identifying the individual as Frimpong.

While noting that MPs had already received the core details, the Speaker emphasised that the legislature is closely monitoring the situation.

“You’ve already been given the details,” he added. “What I can add is that Parliament is working with government to ensure justice is done in this matter.”
Bagbin promised to provide regular updates to the chamber as proceedings move forward, stating, “I will in due course keep the House updated with developments in the matter,” he told the chamber.
He also expressed solidarity with the MP’s family and local community during this challenging period.

“Permit me on your behalf to convey the empathy of the House to members of his family and his constituents for this unfortunate development,” he said.
The Speaker encouraged them to remain resilient, guaranteeing that Parliament would advocate for the MP’s legal rights.

“We are with them and we are doing everything to make sure that he is accorded all the due respect, dignity and the opportunities available to all of us in international law.”

Furthermore, Bagbin acknowledged the extensive briefings already provided by diplomatic channels regarding the initial interventions.

“I’m happy that voluminous information has been given you as to the steps that have been taken by the Minister of Foreign Affairs together with our mission in Holland,” Bagbin noted.

The Speaker advised MPs to maintain composure and avoid interfering with the ongoing legal and diplomatic processes.

“So please keep your call and leave those who are involved.”
