Residents of Nyame Bekyere, a farming community near Akoase in the Eastern Region’s Birim North District, have been left reeling after the murder of a 22-year-old commercial motorcyclist.
The victim, Eric Nyarko—locally known as ‘Junior’—was reportedly killed whilst operating his motorcycle taxi business.
In the wake of the tragedy, grieving relatives and fellow riders have urged the police to intensify their investigation and bolster local security.
The victim’s sister, Grace Darkoa, recounted that her brother failed to return home after leaving for work.
Following several unsuccessful attempts to find him, family members dialled his mobile phone, which was answered by an unidentified individual who promptly switched the handset off.
The family subsequently received confirmation that the young rider had been killed. Miss Darkoa has appealed to the Ghana Police Service to conduct a rigorous investigation to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted.
Meanwhile, local motorcyclists and relatives note that the tragedy has sparked widespread fear amongst those operating in the area.
They alleged that this is not an isolated occurrence, claiming similar violent targeted attacks have previously taken place in Nyame Bekyere.
Consequently, they are calling on security agencies and local authorities to address the situation as an urgent security priority to safeguard residents and transport workers.
The victim’s body has been conveyed to the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital for preservation and a post-mortem examination, whilst police launch a manhunt for the unidentified assailants.
