The Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit (MMT), Mr. Haroun Apaw Wiredu, has stated that the management and board of the transport company will do their utmost to ensure that the newly inaugurated fleet of 100 29-seater buses is put to good use.

He noted that these new buses form part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen public transport services and improve mobility across the country.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio, he indicated that this acquisition is part of a larger programme to procure 300 buses aimed at boosting the operational capacity of the Metro Mass Transit system and enhancing the efficiency of transport services nationwide.

According to Mr. Wiredu, the management of the transport operator will complement the government’s investment with strong operational discipline, including efficient scheduling, professional driving practices, and strict maintenance routines.

He explained that this first fleet of 100 buses is part of the 300 earmarked for purchase, with the next batch of 100 buses expected to arrive by the end of July, and the final batch arriving by October.

Expatiating on the timeline and goals, he said, “The first batch of 100 buses arrived in Ghana in April 2026, with the remaining units expected later in the year as part of the full 300-bus procurement programme. The arrival of these buses is designed to expand passenger capacity, extend services to underserved areas and provide more reliable and dignified transport options for commuters. We remain dedicated in ensuring that we make good use of the buses.

The MMT had faced challenges with the fleet of buses reduced. It was part of the reasons why President John Dramani Mahama in his state of the nation address pledged to purchase new fleet of buses for MMT. We extend our gratitude to the President, the Transport Ministry, management and board of MMT.”

He further stressed that the arrival of these new vehicles will significantly increase MMT’s operational reach.

The company is currently plying just over 80 routes nationwide, a stark contrast to its target capacity of 380 routes.
