Seven suspects including police and soldiers arrested in connection with robbery

Seven suspects, including three police officers and two soldiers, have been arrested following a major operation to dismantle a sophisticated robbery syndicate operating across Ghana.

The gang has been linked to a string of violent attacks in Accra, Tema, Anyinam, Kumasi, and Takoradi, targeting victims for cash, gold, and mercury.

The nationwide investigation was triggered by a complaint from an Ivorian investor, Mousa Bamba. Mr Bamba reported being lured to the Dzorwulu suburb of Accra under the pretext of purchasing six kilograms of gold, valued at $450,000 (£355,000).

Upon his arrival, suspects posing as military personnel and officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) robbed him at gunpoint before fleeing.

Initial police inquiries led to the capture of Mohammed Umaro, known as Alhaji, and Gabriel Sewornu, alias Dangote.
Deepening investigations quickly implicated serving members of the security agencies.

Two military personnel, Lance Corporal Eugene Akurugu and Lance Corporal Emmanuel Arko (alias Bullet), were named alongside three police officers: Inspector Richmond Osei, Corporal Gideon Anor, and Lance Corporal Felix Deku Tetteyga.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the three implicated police officers have been interdicted—suspended from duty—to allow investigations to proceed without interference.

The crackdown intensified over the weekend. On 23 and 24 May, intelligence-led raids orchestrated by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) secured the arrests of three further suspects: Justin Oduro (alias Don King or Mafia), Clement Gyasi, and Farouk Zakari.

All seven suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with ongoing inquiries.

According to the Police, operations are still underway to track down and arrest remaining accomplices linked to the network.
