The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that plans are well underway to receive 100 new fire tenders.
ADO1 Alex King Nartey, a member of the Public Relations Department, stated that this initiative is part of broader efforts to retool the service, making it more efficient, effective, and proactive in managing fire outbreaks across the country.
He disclosed this during an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline program while responding to a query about the implementation of a new insurance policy introduced by the current administration for fire officers.
Regarding the insurance scheme, Nartey affirmed that the government is finalizing a policy to provide a GH₵50,000 package for officers injured in the line of duty, and GH₵100,000 for those whose injuries require extended recovery time at home.
Speaking to host Kwabena Agyapong, he emphasized that the government has demonstrated a clear commitment to equipping the GNFS with new logistics.
“Plans are far advanced for the implementation. The government made the pledge and they have put in place measures to get it rolled out. They have even pledged to give us 100 new fire tenders. When these tenders arrive and add onto the insurance package, it would ne in amazing thing for us. We pray that by the end of the year, the tenders will come as pledged,” he stated.
This development follows an announcement by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson during the 2025 budget presentation, outlining plans to retool the GNFS to improve its emergency response capabilities.
Delivering the budget statement on Thursday, November 13, 2025, Dr. Forson noted that the government would purchase 100 new fire tenders alongside other essential equipment. He explained that this intervention was critical, as a lack of modern logistics has hindered the service’s capacity to safeguard the public.
“Mr. Speaker, the Ghana National Fire Service lacks basic equipment to enable them function effectively in their duty to ensure public safety and to protect lives and property. To address this unfortunate situation, the government will retool the Ghana National Fire Service by procuring 100 fire tenders and assorted fire equipment for distribution across the country.”
Alongside the primary retooling initiative, the government plans to collaborate with the private sector to acquire specialized equipment for fighting fires in high-rise buildings.
“Mr. Speaker, the government will also work with the private sector to bring in high-rise fire equipment. This will improve the effectiveness of the Ghana National Fire Service to respond to emergencies.”
