The first batch of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa arrived safely in Accra on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, following a surge in xenophobic hostility.

A high-powered government delegation, led by the Chief of Staff and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, gathered at the airport to officially welcome the returnees.

The evacuation operation was coordinated by Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa alongside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The intervention followed escalating reports of intimidation, violence, and hostility targeting foreign nationals, which had sparked widespread fear among migrant communities.

While receiving the evacuees, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah urged them to maintain hope and optimism despite the distressing circumstances surrounding their abrupt return.

“Most importantly, we want to encourage our brothers and sisters that once they are back, they should be very optimistic and hopeful about the future,” he said.

“Sometimes God has different ways of opening new doors for us. As a nation, we shall always stand by our people, no matter where you find yourself. Be encouraged, and believe that it shall all end well.”

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that comprehensive arrangements have been established to offer temporary relief, counseling, and reintegration support to the affected individuals and families.

“Today’s welcome ceremony is fully packed. You are going to receive psychosocial support. We have psychologists, medical doctors and nurses,” he said.

The Minister also revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has approved dedicated financial support packages for the returnees, which includes immediate transportation assistance to ensure they can safely reach their respective home communities.

“President Mahama says all of you should be given two special allowances. One for transportation. There will be a transportation allowance to wherever you live, wherever you are going to,” he added.
