The University of Cape Coast (UCC) Police have launched an intensive investigation following the discovery of the body of a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce student at Hutchland Beach, near Duakor in Cape Coast.

The deceased has been identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Human Resource student who was residing in a private hostel at Amamoma.

Her identity was confirmed after her roommate reported to the police station with a photograph, and her family subsequently identified the body at the mortuary on Saturday.

According to the UCC District Police Commander, ASP Abdul Abubakar, residents of the Duakor community spotted the body washed ashore and alerted authorities at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026.

Preliminary examinations conducted at the scene revealed no visible signs of physical injury. The body has since been conveyed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) mortuary.

Recounting the events leading up to the tragedy, the deceased’s roommate stated that Ms. Avinu was last seen on Wednesday evening around 7:00 p.m. “She received a phone call, dressed casually, and left the room,” the roommate told police, adding that friends and colleagues grew increasingly concerned and attempted to trace her whereabouts the following day when she failed to return.

To establish the exact cause of death, police administration confirmed they are taking immediate legal and medical steps. “The Police will, on Monday, June 15, 2026, obtain a coroner’s form from the court to facilitate a post-mortem examination,” ASP Abubakar indicated, noting that the procedure will allow a pathologist to provide full clarity on the case.

In a statement signed by the Acting Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs, Kwabena Antwi-Konadu, the university management extended its condolences and confirmed that support measures are being provided to the bereaved family, roommates, and course mates.

Meanwhile, authorities have cautioned the public against spreading unverified reports online. “The General Public is also being advised to desist from sharing or publicising false information about the incident, as such actions may impede ongoing investigations and cause unnecessary distress to the bereaved family, course mates, management, and the entire University Community,” the institution stated.
