Alajo Floods: Residents declare damaged bridge a ‘Death Trap,’ appeal for urgent repairs

The torrential downpours that struck the capital left parts of Alajo severely inundated, as the overflowing main drainage channel and surrounding waterway infrastructure caused widespread disruption across the area.

The floodwaters not only submerged vehicles but also inflicted structural damage on homes, shops, and other properties.

Carrying significant amounts of solid waste, the deluge tore through access slabs and compromised the structural integrity of local crossing points.

Mechanics and shop owners who lost vehicles and stock to the racing waters, thick mud, and debris that completely overwhelmed the neighbourhood are now busy salvaging and cleaning what remains.

Pedestrians and motorists using the bridge have appealed to the authorities to repair the damaged structure with immediate effect, warning that it has now become a death trap.

During the visit, several individuals appeared hesitant to cross the bridge for fear of falling into the drain below.

Those impacted by the heavy rainfall were seen clearing out their premises and structures, many of which had sustained partial damage.

Among those affected were local shop owners and mobile money agents whose containers were swept away by the current, whilst other shops and buildings completely collapsed.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has provided a briefing regarding the catastrophic floods that ravaged parts of the Greater Accra Region and surrounding areas on Monday.

The disaster impact assessment indicates that 7,761 households have been severely affected, with 12 fatalities confirmed and seven individuals still unaccounted for.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, June 30, the Interior Minister highlighted that 3,882 individuals bore the direct brunt of the torrential rains.

“As of this morning, seven persons are still missing. I have been at the Finance Committee for the past three hours, and I do not know whether many more have been found, but as of this morning, it is still seven, and 12 people are dead,” he told Parliament.
