The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has instituted a 24-hour sanitation service to clear the capital of rubbish and mitigate the city’s ongoing flooding crisis.

Gilbert Ankrah, the Public Relations Officer for the AMA, revealed that extensive checks have shown some residents are continuing to dump their waste indiscriminately, particularly in drains and along the streets.

To address these challenges, he stated that the Mayor has launched this new exercise to curb the sanitation crisis.

Speaking on Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Ankrah noted that the Mayor had already visited flood-affected communities to assess the impact of the rains, inspect the local sanitation situation, and interact with affected residents.

He reaffirmed that the AMA remains committed to strengthening ongoing measures aimed at finding lasting solutions to the city’s perennial flooding challenges.

“The issues of flooding and sanitation remain key items on the agenda of the Mayor,” Mr Ankrah stated.

“We have discovered that a lot more residents are dumping their waste at unauthorised locations, and these are choking our drains and causing floods in the city.

“He has since instructed that we remove all waste at these unauthorised locations to rid the capital of the filth so we can deal with the flooding situation. He has instituted a 24-hour sanitation service. The Assembly is collaborating with Metro Cleaning Services to ensure that we work 24 hours a day within the central business district to clear waste there. It is one of the key locations that generates huge tonnages of waste, and it is our responsibility to clear it.”

Additionally, Mr Ankrah announced that Saturday, 3 July 2026, is National Sanitation Day, during which residents are expected to join the Assembly in desilting drains.

He added that the Mayor hopes the Odaw drains will be expanded in the future to withstand the volume of water that passes through them.

He strongly advised Ghanaians to desist from dumping waste into drains, reiterating that the practice is a major contributor to severe flooding.
