The Ghana Armed Forces will lead a nationwide recovery and clean-up operation following devastating floods on 29 June.

Structures illegally built on waterways and drainage areas face demolition during the exercise, which is part of a broader government strategy to prevent future flooding.

Ghana floods: Death toll rises to 34 with nearly 90,000 displaced

Brigadier General Forster Okae-Yeboah, Director General of Joint Operations, announced on Friday (July 3, 2026) that the military has been tasked with coordinating the recovery efforts.

Personnel, engineers and heavy machinery will deploy to clear debris, silt, fallen trees and collapsed structures from blocked rivers and drainage channels.

The operation also aims to reopen blocked roads, restore critical infrastructure, and support public health campaigns to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid.

The military will work alongside emergency services, health officials, environmental agencies and local government councils.

Authorities warned that any buildings obstructing waterways that pose a flood risk may be demolished in line with local laws.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with security forces and follow traffic diversions, as major routes will face temporary closures.

The government stated the operation will be conducted professionally to enforce planning regulations and improve long-term flood resilience.
