The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has successfully prosecuted nine sanitation offenders as part of an intensified enforcement campaign targeting environmental breaches across the metropolis.
Appearing before the Prempeh Assembly Hall Courts 1 and 2, presided over by His Worship Kwaku Ansah Akrofi and Her Worship Deborah Gyaawa Donkoh, the individuals were convicted of various offences.
These included maintaining insanitary surroundings and washrooms, allowing overgrown weeds, abandoning items, burning waste within residential premises, and discharging effluent into public drains.
One resident was also penalised for keeping an unvaccinated dog.
The court sentenced six of the offenders to a fine of 100 penalty units each (GH¢1,200.00), while two received fines of 140 penalty units (GH¢1,680.00), and one was ordered to pay 80 penalty units (GH¢960.00).
Following the court rulings, the KMA task force extended its enforcement operations to Boakye Dankwah in Dichemso, resulting in further arrests. While some residents complied with the directives, others attempted to evade the officers by locking themselves indoors.
Several individuals claimed they were unaware of the current sanitation laws or the assembly’s public education campaigns.
Responding to these claims, the KMA issued a firm reminder to the public that ignorance of the law provides no legal defense against prosecution.
