GFA praises government over firm stance on South African xenophobia

The Ghana First Alliance (GFA) has commended the government for its firm and principled diplomatic stance regarding the proposed visit of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, amid ongoing xenophobic attacks against Ghanaians and other African nationals.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the alliance said the government’s position reflects Ghana’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity, security, and welfare of its citizens while upholding justice and human rights.

The GFA grounded its commendation on the belief that persistent xenophobic violence demands a proportionate response, noting that no Ghanaian should live in fear because of their nationality.

It argued that strong bilateral relations must be built on mutual respect and equality, calling for concrete measures to prevent violence and hold perpetrators accountable.

According to the alliance, this principled stance sends a clear message that xenophobia and impunity have no place in Africa, whilst reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to continental solidarity.

Recent developments have further underscored the concerns that previously led the group to stage a nationwide peaceful demonstration.

The GFA clarified that its protest was never directed at the people of South Africa, but was instead a stand against violence.

The alliance concluded with an appeal to all African governments, regional institutions, and civil society organisations to work collectively to eliminate xenophobia, protect human rights, and strengthen unity across the continent.
