The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, on Friday, 10 July 2026, led a high-powered delegation from the central bank to participate in a massive clean-up exercise at the Agbogbloshie Market in Accra.
Accompanied by the First Deputy Governor, Dr Zakari Mumuni, and other senior officials, the central bank chief joined traders and community members to clear filth from the market.

The initiative was part of the central bank’s corporate social responsibility and in direct support of the government’s ongoing National Clean-Up Exercise, which aims to improve sanitation across major commercial hubs in the country.
Beyond clearing choked gutters and sweeping the market square, the Bank of Ghana used the platform to launch a crucial public health campaign regarding the physical handling of the local currency, the Ghana Cedi.
Addressing the market women and participants after the exercise, Dr Asiama stressed that maintaining a clean environment is a collective national duty that yields immense long-term benefits for the entire country.

He noted that personal and environmental hygiene should be viewed as mandatory for every citizen, famously declaring to the crowd that while the old adage says cleanliness is next to godliness, he firmly believes cleanliness is godliness itself.
The Governor then drew a direct link between environmental sanitation and the state of the nation’s currency. He explained that poor sanitation practices inevitably lead to the unhygienic handling of banknotes, which poses a severe threat to public health.

According to Dr Asiama, scientific research has repeatedly proven that dirty, crumpled, and poorly handled banknotes become breeding grounds for dangerous bacteria.

He urged the traders and the general public to keep their hands clean and handle the Cedi notes with absolute care to prevent the spread of diseases.
Reaffirming the central bank’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability and corporate citizenship, Dr Asiama pledged that the Bank of Ghana will continue to throw its weight behind future sanitation exercises to ensure a cleaner, healthier Ghana for all.
