NPP demands immediate release of Dennis Miracles Aboagye following alleged arrest by EOCO

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a demand for the immediate release of one of its prominent figures, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, following his arrest by state security operatives at the airport.

In what party officials have described as an act of political intimidation rather than standard law enforcement, Mr Aboagye was picked up by officers from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), reportedly acting with the assistance of Ghana Immigration Service personnel.

Since the arrest, which occurred under highly charged circumstances, his legal team and family members have allegedly been denied any form of access to him.

Party insiders claim his current location remains undisclosed, and no formal charges have been preferred against him, raising serious constitutional concerns.

Mr Aboagye, widely recognised as one of the most vocal and formidable critics of the current administration, had only hours prior formally announced his candidacy for a Director of Communications position within the NPP.

In a strongly worded reaction, the NPP leadership condemned the detention, maintaining that state institutions were being weaponised to silence dissenting voices.

The party argued that the persistent refusal to grant Mr Aboagye access to legal representation flies in the face of the supreme law of the land, specifically citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates that detainees be informed immediately of the reasons for their arrest and given access to counsel.

The opposition has laid out a clear ultimatum to EOCO and the government: either release Mr Aboagye unconditionally with immediate effect or process him before a court of competent jurisdiction as prescribed by law.

They further demanded an end to what they described as a calculated pattern of politically motivated invitations, arrests, and prolonged detentions aimed at weakening the rank and file of the New Patriotic Partym

Sending a direct warning to the heads of state security agencies, the NPP noted that public institutions will outlive any sitting government, adding that the citizens of Ghana are closely watching the unfolding events.

Meanwhile, the party hierarchy has urged its massive support base across the country to remain calm, law-abiding, and united in the face of the ongoing tension, declaring that no amount of intimidation will succeed in silencing their resolve.
