The Ministry of the Interior, led by Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has successfully seized 73 assets linked to illicit drug trafficking in a major national crackdown on organised crime.
The operation, carried out in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), directly targets the financial networks of sophisticated drug syndicates operating across Ghana.
The recovered properties, comprising both movable and immovable assets, were uncovered through a rigorous tracing exercise aimed at stripping criminal networks of their illegal wealth.
The Sector Minister revealed these details during a working visit by Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to the ministry.
He explained that the strategic breakthrough was made possible by significant logistical upgrades for law enforcement agencies and the swift operations of a newly established court dedicated to narcotics-related offences.
“For almost ten years, NACOC had not received any equipment but because of our resilience, we equipped them with almost 22 logistical vehicles and as a result, we have been able to detect 73 assets that are linked to people who are drug traffickers because we are trying to move away from simply getting those who are users.”
The Minister also praised the support received from the judiciary to bolster these operations.
“By the grace of God and the help of the Chief Justice, we have dedicated courts to prosecute narcotics cases.”
The asset recovery campaign utilises Ghana’s robust legal framework, drawing on key provisions within the Narcotic Drugs Law of 1990 (PNDCL 236), the Economic and Organised Crime Office Act of 2010 (Act 804), and the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
Addressing security officials during her visit, Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang applauded the ministry’s achievements and urged law enforcement officers to uphold public trust and refrain from intimidating citizens whilst carrying out their vital duties.
The government maintains that these joint judicial and logistical efforts are successfully dismantling trafficking cartels, demonstrating that its updated anti-narcotics strategy is producing real results.
