Lamenting the unjust treatment of his client, prominent lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea has declared that Dennis Miracles Aboagye is being treated as if he were a common criminal.
He argued that it makes absolutely no sense to detain a man who voluntarily cleared immigration at the Accra International Airport after traveling abroad.
According to his legal counsel, Mr. Aboagye has consistently cooperated with authorities during previous invitations.
In fact, past records show that he had already fully complied with an inquiry from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and was assured he would simply be contacted if his presence was required again, claimed.
Expressing his deep bewilderment, Mr. Atta Akyea asserted that he could not comprehend why a decent citizen who is clearly not a flight risk was suddenly arrested and remains detained, describing the state agency’s actions as a massive setback for democracy and the rule of law in a civilized society.
The situation has been further compounded by what Mr. Atta Akyea describes as “oppressive and cruel” bail conditions. EOCO has set bail for the aspiring National Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at an astronomical GH¢50 million, requiring three sureties, two of whom must be justified.
The lawyer vehemently criticized these stringent requirements during an interview with journalists, calling them structurally impossible to satisfy. He was emphatic that these astronomical terms were deliberately designed to punish his client rather than facilitate his release.
When asked categorically if Mr. Aboagye could secure an immediate release, Mr. Atta Akyea stated there was absolutely no way they could post bail under the current terms.
He characterised the entire development as highly unfortunate, warning that the rule of law in the country is currently “sitting upside down.”
“How is he going to be released? How is he going to post the bail bonds? GH¢50 million, three sureties, two to be justified. How can it be met? Where are you going to find properties worth GH¢50 million and finding it tonight?” he questioned.
