The High Court in Accra is expected to consider an urgent request for the adjournment of a motion seeking the deferment of judgment and a constitutional referral in the case involving Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and Akonta Mining Company Limited.
The substantive hearing for the application filed by the politician and his mining firm had originally been scheduled for Monday, July 20, 2026, before Criminal Jurisdiction ‘4’ of the Accra High Court. However, the defense team has formally written to the Court Registrar requesting a temporary postponement due to the unavailability of their lead counsel.
In a letter dated July 17, 2026, signed by Charles Boakye, Esq. on behalf of the legal firm Zoe, Akyea & Co., the court was informed that the lead advocate seised with the conduct of the case, Mr. Samuel Atta Akyea, is currently outside the jurisdiction of the Republic of Ghana.
The firm explained that Mr. Atta Akyea traveled for a prior personal engagement and is expected back in the country on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.
Consequently, the defense is praying the court to reschedule the hearing to a date after July 22, ensuring that the legal practitioner best placed to move the critical motion can be physically present to argue the case.
Counsel for the applicants assured the trial judge that the request was made in utmost good faith and not intended to deliberately delay the administration of justice.
The firm maintained that the brief suspension is solely aimed at preserving the rights of the first and third accused persons to be fully represented by their preferred legal advocate.
The criminal prosecution, carrying the suit number CR/0004/2026, features the Republic against Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining Company Limited, and a second accused person, Kwame Antwi, who remains at large.
Meanwhile, the state has confirmed this, indicating its preparedness to appear before the court for proceedings as there has been no formal communication for an adjournment.

Meanwhile Judgment is scheduled for same date, Monday, July 20.
The Republic will be in Court for proceedings of the day as there has been no formal communication of adjournment.”
