Officers from the Manhyia District Police Command have arrested two individuals following an intelligence-led operation at the Asawase Market in Kumasi, where 100 compressed parcels of suspected narcotic substances were seized.
“The Manhyia District Police Command has arrested two persons in connection with the unlawful possession and transportation of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs during an intelligence-led operation at the Asawase Market in Kumasi,” stated the Regional Command.
The operation was carried out on Tuesday, 21st July 2026, after security personnel acted on credible intelligence regarding the illicit movement of drugs concealed in agricultural packaging.
“The operation was conducted on 21st July 2026 following credible intelligence that suspected narcotic drugs were being transported concealed in fertilizer sacks. Acting on the information, a team led by the District Commander, with personnel from the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Zongo Police Station, proceeded to the location and arrested two suspects,” police reported.
The suspects involved in the incident have been identified as 37-year-old Osman Bassein and 38-year-old Mohammed Abdul-Razak.
Upon executing a search in the presence of independent witnesses, officers uncovered 13 fertilizer sacks filled with second-hand clothing used to hide the illicit packages.
“During a search conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, the police retrieved thirteen (13) fertilizer sacks. Inspection of the sacks revealed second-hand clothing concealing one hundred (100) compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs,” the police revealed.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters, the retrieved exhibits were photographed at the scene in line with evidential protocols and have been secured for forensic laboratory testing.
The two suspects remain in police custody while investigations continue, after which they will be processed for court in accordance with the law.
