26637-1

The Upper West Regional Police Command has dismantled a notorious motorbike theft syndicate operating within the region, arresting several suspects and recovering 17 stolen motorbikes.

The breakthrough follows an investigation launched on 11th July 2026 after a female victim reported that her black Luojia motorbike, with registration number M-21-UW 3512, had been stolen from the Ghana National Fire Service premises in Jirapa.

According to the police, the victim actively shared details of the missing bike with friends and officers, helping launch a swift search.

Acting on intelligence, police officers traced and arrested the main suspect, Nasiru Muftawu, at Loho, where he was found in possession of the stolen motorbike.

“During interrogation, the suspect admitted to stealing the motorbike and was subsequently taken into custody to assist with investigations,” the police stated in a press release signed by the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr Francis Yiribaare.

Further intelligence-led operations led officers to arrest three key accomplices: Basit Muftawu, alias Posey (19); Issahaku Maruf, alias Katel (22); and Mohammed Ali, alias Geewaa (18).

Police also retrieved additional stolen exhibits linked to the crimes from three other individuals: Rashid Kankan (20), Mutala Rashad (20), and Haruna Hamdan, alias DJ (20).

Sustained investigations across the municipality enabled officers to recover 16 more motorbikes hidden across various locations, including UBIDS, Chakor, and Glamon.

The suspects have since been arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court and remanded into police custody. They are scheduled to reappear in court on Tuesday, 11th August 2026.

In the statement, the Regional Police Command appealed to members of the public who have recently lost motorbikes to come forward.

“The Regional Police Command appeals to members of the public who have lost their motorbikes to report to the Wa District Police Headquarters with valid ownership documents for identification and retrieval of their motorbikes,” the release noted.

DCOP Mr Yiribaare reiterated the Command’s firm resolve to tackle local crime, assuring residents of their “unwavering commitment to combating crime and dismantling criminal networks.”

He further urged the public to maintain a strong partnership with law enforcement by continuing to share timely and credible information to support ongoing policing efforts in the region.
