South Africa Xenophobia: Govt Reactivates Emergency Evacuation for Stranded Citizens

July 25, 2026
27180-1

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the resumption of the next phase of evacuations for Ghanaian nationals currently residing in South Africa, following a renewed surge in xenophobic violence targeting migrants.

The latest exercise is expected to bring home approximately 1,000 Ghanaians in structured groups. The initial flights under this renewed effort are scheduled to touch down in Accra on Sunday, 26th July, and Monday, 27th July, 2026.

According to the Ministry, the exercise will prioritize citizens who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria to voluntarily return home with state support.

“Consistent with our policy, priority will be given to women, children, the elderly, persons with medical conditions, and students,” the Ministry stated in an official release.

Distressed citizens requiring immediate assistance or information regarding travel arrangements have been directed to reach the High Commission in Pretoria via telephone on 0723681010.

The Ghanaian authorities also expressed profound gratitude to faith-based and private partners in South Africa who provided emergency shelter to affected citizens during the height of the unrest.

“The Government of Ghana hereby conveys special heartfelt appreciation to the Ghanaian leadership of the Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg, and Global Kingdom Investment Pty. Ltd., for generously allowing their premises to be used as shelters for many weeks, free of charge, for our compatriots who fled their homes awaiting processing by our High Commission,” the statement noted.

Reassuring the public of its commitment to safeguarding citizens abroad, the Ministry confirmed that emergency consular responses have been fully reactivated to ensure a smooth operation.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges all our compatriots in South Africa to remain calm, avoid areas of unrest, ignore provocations and cooperate fully with officials of the Ghana High Commission to ensure a successful humanitarian evacuation as was experienced during the first phase,” the release added, emphasizing that “Government assures that we shall leave no Ghanaian behind in harm’s way.”
