Mahama urges civic responsibility following viral sanitation video in Tema New Town

Following a widely circulated video from the environmental group “Buz Stop Boys” depicting fish processing taking place alongside heavy waste accumulation in Tema New Town, President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to take greater personal responsibility for environmental upkeep.

The footage generated significant public debate regarding hygiene and ecological practices, as large piles of garbage were captured adjacent to fish drying grounds, triggering health concerns over contaminated food entering local markets.

While addressing congregants during the Men Ministry Day Celebration at the Ringway Gospel Centre Assemblies of God Church on Sunday, August 2, President Mahama emphasized that the recording serves as a stark wake-up call for civic duty.

“Recently I was watching a video, Buz Stop Boys went to Tema New Town and if you see the rubbish there, meanwhile they were drying fish and that fish was supposed to come into the market. The worst one was, some nice woman on the beach doing her business. We must be responsible as citizens,” he said.

The Head of State underscored that government initiatives to tackle civic cleanliness will fall short without matching discipline from the public.

He noted with regret that residents frequently revert to careless waste disposal as soon as seasonal heavy rains clear, pointing out that such habits directly fuel subsequent flood disasters.

“Now the floods have gone and so we are like the vulture. Throwing sachet water, Styrofoam, food packaging and everything into the drain, we should remember that when the floods come they will come and meet those things there,” he said.

Mahama argued that safeguarding the ecosystem demands a fundamental mindset shift, where individuals assume accountability for their neighborhoods and recognize the long-term impact of their daily choices.

Reaching into scripture to reinforce his point, he referenced James 2:17 to highlight that spiritual convictions must be accompanied by practical measures.

“James 2:17 tells us that faith without works is dead and so if our faith must go with works, then it must show in our character,” he added.
