Akyem Oda MP condemns MCE’s traditional curse, stands by galamsey allegations

Tensions between Akyem Oda lawmaker Akwasi Acquah and Birim Central Chief Executive Solomon Kusi Brako have escalated following a widely circulated video depicting the MCE performing traditional rituals and invoking curses against the legislator alongside a riverbank.

Responding to public alarm raised by concerned constituents, Hon. Acquah publicly addressed the incident, standing firm on his year-long accusations that the municipal chief executive has actively enabled illicit mining operations within the region.

The lawmaker revealed that despite submitting formal petitions to government officials and sector ministers, his complaints have yielded no official intervention.

Consequently, he has turned to civil society organizations and media outlets to demand a thorough investigation, asserting that his claims are grounded in solid proof.

Hon. Acquah criticized the MCE’s decision to resort to riverbed curses rather than pursuing a defamation lawsuit through the judicial system.

Referencing statutory penalties for illegal mining—including the strict 20-year prison sentence previously highlighted in the case involving NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako—the MP accused the administration of protecting its own key figures. Citing Proverbs 26:2, the Christian parliamentarian emphasized that the Ghanaian constitution does not acknowledge traditional curses as valid dispute resolution, noting that such actions by an appointed public official raise serious administrative concerns.
