The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has described the force used by the security agencies deployed to manage the impasse at the Nursing Training College, Techiman-Krobo, as excessive.
The Public Relations Officer for the Association, Philimon Gyapong, noted that the law requires the use of minimal force in such situations. However, the soldiers and police officers manhandled the students.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that some of the security officers were unprofessional in their handling of the students.
He noted that the videos were difficult to watch and admonished authorities to ensure that such an incident does not repeat itself.
This comes after an unlawful assembly by students of the Krobo Nursing Training College near Techiman turned violent, resulting in the arrest of two students.
Following the incident, the Health Ministry announced the immediate temporary closure of the Nursing Training College at Techiman-Krobo due to unrest and a breakdown of discipline on campus.
Commenting on the development, Philimon Gyapong reiterated that the situation could have been handled in a more professional manner.
“The police and soldiers deployed to maintain law and order misconducted themselves. They were unprofessional and could have done better. The law required them to use minimum force, but what they used was excessive or extreme force. You will be sad watching the video. They mishandled the students, especially the ladies. I think going forward, we will encourage the officers to exercise caution and avoid using excessive force,” he stated.
He also advised the students to allow officials to investigate the matter and refrain from using unlawful means to address their grievances, urging them not to return to the school to misbehave but to let authorities handle the situation.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has constituted a committee to investigate matters concerning the unrest at the Nursing Training College, Techiman-Krobo.
The committee is chaired by Prof. Vida Nyagre Yekong, Deputy Registrar of the Health Facilities Regulatory Authority, nurse, and former Dean of the School of Nursing at UDS. Other members include Mr. Ahmed Bennett Mumuni, Human Resource Manager of the Bono East Regional Coordinating Council; Nana Asa Akon Panin, Techiman-Krobohene; Mrs. Hepthzebah Gyimah, Deputy Director of Operations and representative of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC); Mrs. Isha Sena Iddrisu, Secretary to the Conference of Heads of Health Training Institutions; Nashiru-Deen Akparibo, President of the Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees’ Association (GNMTA); and Dr. Inua Yussuf Issahaku Esq., Legal Director of the Ministry of Health.
The committee is expected to establish the facts surrounding the issues that led to the unrest, review and determine whether existing policies, codes of conduct, and administrative procedures were complied with, and make recommendations to the Minister for Health for appropriate action.
It is further expected to submit a comprehensive report to the Minister on or before 11th August 2026.
