A multi-vehicle crash on the N6 Highway has completely blocked both lanes of traffic at the Birimso Bridge, leaving Accra and Kumasi-bound commuters stranded along the busy corridor.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, 3 August 2026, involved a high-occupancy passenger bus, a heavily loaded articulated truck, and a sedan car.

The severe impact of the pile-up brought vehicular movement on the stretch to an abrupt standstill, obstructing both lanes of the highway.

Officers from the Eastern South Regional Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) based in Kibi rushed to the scene shortly after the crash to manage the situation and assist stranded road users.

To ease the mounting gridlock, the police have implemented emergency traffic diversions through Kibi. Traffic heading towards Accra is currently being re-routed at Nsutam, while motorists travelling towards Kumasi are required to divert at Apedwa.

In an official public notice issued following the accident, the Ghana Police Service urged all commuters and drivers using the N6 stretch to remain patient and exercise caution.

“We entreat motorists and other road users to cooperate with the officers on the ground as they work to restore normal traffic flow,” the police stated.

Emergency personnel and recovery teams remain at the Birimso Bridge location working to clear the wreckage, towed damaged vehicles off the road, and reopen the highway to normal traffic.

Drivers are strongly advised to adhere to police directives at the diversion points to avoid further delays.
