Four individuals have been taken into custody following two targeted anti-narcotics swoops by the Tema Regional Police Command, which led to the interception of 866 packages of suspected cocaine valued at approximately $6.928 million, alongside four bags of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp.
The swoops, executed on Wednesday, form part of an intensified campaign by the Ghana Police Service to dismantle illicit drug trafficking syndicates operating within the region.
Addressing the press in Tema, the Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Eric Asamoah Asiedu, disclosed that law enforcement officers acted on intelligence indicating that a syndicate was packing contraband disguised within bags of cassava flakes into a 40-foot container inside the Tema Port enclave.
A tactical squad descended on the facility, apprehending 31-year-old Dutch national Gilano Horwin, alongside John Mensah Sabah, 41, and Alhaji Iddris Haruna, 52, as they oversaw the consignment being loaded onto a heavy-duty haulage truck bearing registration number WR 1118-10.
A detailed inspection of the container revealed 866 blocks of white powder concealed beneath the gari.
DCOP Asiedu noted that Horwin confessed to owning the illegal cargo during initial questioning. While the trio remains in police custody assisting with investigations, the seized substances have been secured for forensic testing, alongside the Indian hemp intercepted in a separate operation at Tsopoli.
