Wontumi appeals conviction from Nsawam, applies for bail pending appeal

Embattled Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has filed an application for bail pending an appeal following his recent incarceration at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

The application, filed at the Criminal Division ‘4’ of the High Court of Justice in Accra on 6th August 2026, seeks an order to grant the NPP regional chairman bail while his appeal against his conviction is heard.

The legal action, under Suit Number CR/0004/2026, names The Republic as the Respondent, with Bernard Antwi Boasiako listed as the 1st Appellant/Applicant, Kwame Antwi (currently at large) as the 2nd Accused Person, and Akonta Mining Company Limited as the 3rd Appellant.

According to the legal notice drafted by his legal counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea Esq. of Zoe, Akyea & Co., the court will be moved on Wednesday, 19th August 2026, at 9:00 am in the forenoon. Counsel for the 1st and 3rd Appellants is expected to present arguments based on the grounds set out in an accompanying affidavit.

The Notice of Motion has been brought pursuant to Section 96(1) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30) and Section 33(1) of the Courts Act, 1993 (Act 459).

Copies of the court processes have been served on the Office of the Attorney-General in Accra, as well as the Director of Prisons at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, where Mr Antwi Boasiako is currently remanded.
