Tragedy struck the Ansaful community in Winneba on Thursday evening after a five-year-old girl lost her life in a open manhole near the Christ Apostolic Church.
Officers from the Winneba Municipal Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) retrieved the lifeless body of the young child from the 12-foot-deep, water-logged pit following a desperate search operation.
The victim’s father, Mr. Francis Zewu, rushed to the local Fire Station to report the distressing incident at approximately 19:57 GMT on Thursday, 3rd September 2026.
A crew of four personnel led by Station Officer Grade I Anthony McCarthy was quickly dispatched to the scene, arriving at 20:32 GMT. Upon arrival, the rescue team met distraught family and church members gathered around the uncovered hole.
Firefighters immediately deployed a heavy-duty water pump to drain the submerged pit. After an intense 34-minute operation, the crew managed to access the bottom of the manhole and retrieve the child’s body.
Her body was handed over to police officers present at the scene for formal identification and further investigation.
