The Upper West Regional Police Command has dismantled an armed robbery syndicate operating across the Wa West District and Wa Municipality following a months-long, intelligence-led operation.

Six suspects, including a deceased member, were targeted after investigations tied the syndicate to a string of violent attacks where victims were slashed with machetes and forced to surrender their Mobile Money (MoMo) personal identification numbers.

The suspects have been identified as Amadu Moro, 35; Adama Yussif, 40; Iddrissu Adama, 35; Korika Issaka, 20; and Zakaria Brigi, 21. A sixth key suspect, 52-year-old Nasiru Abdul Rahman, died at the Upper West Regional Hospital after sustaining injuries during the police swoop.

According to the Police Command, the gang’s key operatives—Yussif, Moro, and the late Rahman—have been linked to multiple robbery incidents, including attacks at Kpenateng Junction on 1 August 2026, Kulkpara-Dapoha on 19 June 2026, Kpenateng Community on 15 June 2026, and Piisi-Dapoha on 23 May and 27 March 2026.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, the police disclosed that the syndicate had robbed victims of approximately GH¢22,070 in cash and illegally siphoned an additional GH¢3,274 through MoMo transfers. Officers also retrieved seven mobile phones from the suspects for forensic examination.

“During the operation, suspect Nasiru Abdul Rahman sustained injuries and died at the Upper West Regional Hospital upon arrival. The body has since been deposited at the same hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, stated in the release.

Police have launched a manhunt for two additional gang members who remain at large: 30-year-old Haruna, who allegedly served as the syndicate’s armourer, and 24-year-old Amadu Mahamudu, the son of the deceased suspect.

“The Upper West Regional Command urges residents, particularly those in communities affected by recent robbery incidents, to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements and activities to the Police,” DCOP Yiribaare added, appealing to the public for credible information to help track down the remaining suspects.
