Tanker drivers suspend strike action following BOST intervention

August 18, 2026
GNPTDU

Members of the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union have called off their three-day sit-down strike following initial steps to address their operational grievances.

The union had embarked on the industrial action to protest the severe deterioration of their parking facility near the Kumasi Depot, managed by the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) company.

The deplorable condition of the yard had raised significant safety alarms among the drivers, particularly during heavy downpours when navigation becomes hazardous.

Beyond the poor infrastructure, the union highlighted persistent product shortages recorded during offloading procedures at the depot.

Union leadership attributed these discrepancies to faulty equipment and machinery used in discharging petroleum products from the tankers.

Speaking to host Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s flagship morning show, Frontline, National President of the union, George Nyaunu, confirmed that the strike was suspended because BOST officials have begun resolving the highlighted defects.

He explained that the drivers were forced into industrial action after previous engagements with management repeatedly failed to yield practical solutions.

Mr Nyaunu noted that whilst tanker drivers perform essential services vital to the nation’s economy, they have historically been denied the respect and fair remuneration they deserve.

He revealed that drivers earn pittance wages, leaving them with no financial capacity to absorb losses caused by faulty depot infrastructure.

The timely resolution brings relief to the petroleum downstream sector, averting potential fuel supply disruptions and widespread shortages across the country.
