The Minority Caucus in Parliament has requested a postponement of the screening for three Supreme Court candidates, maintaining that no immediate vacancies exist to warrant a hasty procedure.
Addressing reporters prior to the scheduled Thursday, August 27 session, Caucus Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin noted that the apex court is fully staffed and actively handling litigation. He questioned the Appointments Committee’s haste, noting that the individuals are intended to expand the bench rather than replace outgoing judges.
“If there is no vacancy to fill, there is certainly no emergency compelling anyone to fill it inside three days. There is no fire here.”
The candidates under consideration include Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Edward Amoako Asante—who previously headed the ECOWAS Court of Justice—alongside former Ghana Bar Association President Anthony Forson Jr.
Afenyo-Markin proposed that the committee hold hearings in September, allowing the plenary to review the findings upon reconvening in October. He further dismissed claims that the ongoing legal recess warrants urgent action, emphasizing that the court remains available to adjudicate emergency matters.
