Officers from the Ashanti Regional Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service have seized 199 vehicles following a crackdown on the unlawful installation and use of sirens and emergency strobe lights.
The Regional MTTD Commander, Superintendent Kwame Boadi, made this known during a press briefing to update the public on police operations aimed at restoring order to the roads.
According to Superintendent Boadi, police targeted major thoroughfares and busy intersections across the metropolis during the special operation.
Key locations where the arrests were made include the Abuakwa stretch, Kwadaso, Airport Roundabout, Ahodwo Roundabout, Santasi, Apire, and Abrepo Junction.
The commander explained that the swoop was designed to curb the growing nuisance of private car owners and unauthorized motorists fitting emergency equipment onto their vehicles.
He noted that such illegal practices create chaos, pose serious safety risks, and put other road users in danger.
Providing an update on judicial proceedings, Superintendent Boadi confirmed that court action against the culprits has already commenced. One offender has been convicted and handed a three-month prison sentence, whilst the remaining motorists are currently awaiting prosecution.
Superintendent Boadi issued a strong warning to motorists and vehicle owners to remove all unauthorized sirens and flashing lights immediately.
He emphasised that the command will not relent in its enforcement drive and will ensure that anyone caught violating traffic laws faces the full rigours of the law.
The illegal mounting of emergency lights and sirens has turned into a major issue across the Ashanti Region, with motorists frequently using the devices to bully their way through traffic congestion and intimidate fellow drivers.
The Ashanti MTTD has assured the public that the targeted operations will be maintained indefinitely to bring discipline and sanity back to the road network.
