Thirteen people have died and 18 others were injured in a serious road accident on the Sege Highway along the Ada road.

The collision, involving a Ford Transit and a Toyota Hiace, occurred on Wednesday, 2 September, as both vehicles were travelling towards Ada.

Firefighters from the Sege station attended the scene to rescue the victims.

Confirming the casualties, DOII Ebenezer Yenzu, Public Relations Officer for the Tema Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), clarified that 18 people were injured, correcting earlier reports that stated five.

“It was a gory accident,” Yenzu said, offering his condolences to the families of the victims. “Unconfirmed reports suggest some of the injured are currently responding to treatment.”

The cause of the crash remains unknown, and investigations are under way. Yenzu noted that most of the deceased were women, many of whom were traders travelling to a local market.

Personal belongings recovered from the scene are currently held at the Sege Police Station.

Following the incident, Yenzu called on authorities to invest urgently in emergency medical care for the area, highlighting the lack of adequate trauma facilities along a known high-risk stretch of road.

“The lack of a trauma centre in the area delays critical care for accident victims,” he said. “Just as we have the Winneba Trauma Centre, it would not be out of place to establish one around Sege or expand Sege Hospital to meet emergency demands.”
