Six suspects have been arrested following a violent mob attack in New Winneba that left three people dead and 15 others injured, including a police officer.

The Central Regional Police Command identified the suspects in custody as Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22.

“All six suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations,” Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie of the Public Affairs Unit said.

The arrests follow a rampage on Tuesday morning when an armed mob of roughly 300 people invaded the town. Police reported that the crowd, hailing from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze, targeted local residents and commercial properties.

“On 01/09/2026 at 10:40 am, about 300 irate mob wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed the New Winneba Township, stores and residence of the natives, attacked them and caused damage to properties,” the police command stated.

Victims injured during the assault were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, where a medical officer on duty subsequently confirmed three fatalities.

Officers recovering evidence at the scene retrieved a locally made single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge.

Security forces have since mounted a major operation to secure the area, drawing officers from the Winneba, Agona Swedru, and Mankessim divisions, alongside a specialist team and two armoured vehicles sent from National Headquarters.

Police have established six snap checkpoints and stepped up day and night patrols, with officers from the Police Intelligence Department and Criminal Investigation Department deployed to maintain order. Authorities report that the situation is currently under control.
