Disabled graduates turn to Minority Caucus over unemployment concerns

Scores of jobless tertiary-educated persons with disabilities have escalated their fight for public sector employment by appealing directly to Parliament’s Minority caucus, following weeks of unanswered petitions to the Jubilee House.

The Coalition of Unemployed Graduates with Disabilities took the decision after government officials repeatedly ignored emails, telephone calls, and deadlines after receiving their formal grievances at the presidency.

The group is demanding the immediate public sector recruitment of roughly 400 qualified persons with disabilities.

Additionally, they are pressing for the strict enforcement of statutory employment quotas, incentives for private sector employers, and a mandatory policy reserving a designated percentage of recruitments within Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies and state-owned enterprises for educated persons with disabilities.

Under parliamentary standing orders, formal petitions can only reach the Speaker of Parliament through a sitting lawmaker. Driven by this procedural requirement, executive members of the coalition convened with parliamentary leaders on Capitol Hill this morning to formally hand over their dossier.

Addressing journalists shortly after the standard engagement with Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, coalition convener Felix Baah stated that the session was constructive.

He expressed confidence that the Minority caucus would champion their cause on the floor of the House to deliver tangible outcomes for their members.
