Broadcasters operating on Ghana’s National Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) network will be required to pay a monthly fee of $7,000 (£5,300) from January 2027, the government has announced.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, revealed the upcoming tariff structure as part of a fresh long-term financing strategy designed to overhaul the national digital platform.

Addressing Monday’s Accountability Series event, Mr George explained that the pricing decision followed an extensive assessment of the infrastructure and recommendations put forward by a specialized committee. The new mechanism introduces a stepped support system to work alongside current state subsidies, ensuring the financial viability of the platform while easing the transition for local channels.

“I set up a committee, and that committee has recommended a sustainable cost-sharing framework and a graduated tariff support mechanism to complement the subsidised national tariff, which will see all TV stations on our DTT platform pay US$7,000 per month during the initial implementation years in a graduated manner,” he hinted.

Alongside the broadcasting reforms, the minister outlined broader ambitions to modernize the nation’s digital governance. Ministers are currently reviewing 15 key pieces of technology legislation, with public and industry consultations already completed for 10 priority measures. The legislative overhaul includes the Data Harmonisation Bill, the Cybersecurity Authority Bill, the Ghana Innovation and Startup Bill, and the National Communications Authority Bill.
