The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has debunked claims suggesting that it plans to issue new currency notes or higher denominations as part of its upcoming “Heritage Series” rollout on November 3, 2026.
According to the Director of the Currency Management Department at the central bank, Dominic Owusu, the exercise is purely an upgrade of the existing banknotes already in circulation, not the introduction of new ones. He subsequently urged the public to ignore speculations on social media claiming that the central bank intends to introduce new notes and higher denominations, such as GH¢500 cedis.
Mr Owusu clarified that the upgraded notes form part of measures to address dynamic changes in currency circulation, technological developments, and modern security standards. The upgraded banknotes will feature Ghanaian iconographic elements and honour national heroes, telling the country’s story while reflecting its future aspirations.
He added that the upgraded notes will feature advanced security measures, improved durability, and updated designs reflecting the nation’s cultural identity.
“It will also come with improved durability and modern designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage and aspirations”, he added.
“They [currencies] are designed to provide stronger protection against counterfeiting, withstand the demands of prolonged circulation, and support more efficient and cost-effective currency management”.
The central bank confirmed that the “Heritage Series” will co-circulate alongside the current banknotes, allowing the public to seamlessly use existing notes following the official launch.
