The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has led a delegation of the Minority Caucus to engage the leadership of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) on critical national issues, including the economy, constitutional governance, the rule of law, and the financial performance of GoldBod.

The meeting followed an invitation from the Council as part of its broad consultations with key democratic institutions to foster transparency, accountability, and national development.

During the engagement, the Minority highlighted the severe economic hardship confronting Ghanaians, particularly youth unemployment, emphasizing that any economic recovery must deliver jobs, improved living standards, and tangible opportunities for the youth.

The Caucus also raised serious concerns over reported US$1.7 billion losses tied to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, warning of its severe implications for the Bank of Ghana’s balance sheet and the potential financial burden on taxpayers. In view of this, the Minority demanded an independent and transparent reconciliation of all related transactions and figures.

On constitutional governance and the rule of law, the delegation expressed deep worry over presidential term limits and what it described as the selective application of investigative and prosecutorial powers targeting opposition figures. Hon. Afenyo-Markin specifically condemned the attempted arrest and subsequent detention of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. He stressed that while the Minority does not seek immunity from lawful investigations, state agencies must operate strictly within constitutional bounds and refrain from using coercive tactics to intimidate political opponents.

The discussions further touched on press freedom, religious rights, mission schools, social media regulation, artificial intelligence, narcotics trafficking, illegal mining (galamsey), water security, and the future of the National Cathedral.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin commended the Christian Council for its enduring contributions to Ghana’s democratic stability and its openness to dialogue on matters of national importance.

Responding, the leadership of the Christian Council praised the Minority for actively pursuing its constitutional oversight role. The Council assured the delegation that the issues raised would be referred to relevant bodies within the Church for further consideration.

The Minority reaffirmed its dedication to remaining peaceful, law-abiding, and steadfast in holding the executive accountable, maintaining that the interest of Ghana must always supersede partisan political interests.
