Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has held an interactive session with resident doctors to evaluate their professional development and outline key measures aimed at enhancing subspecialty training at the facility.
Speaking at the engagement, the Chief Executive of KBTH, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, described the dialogue as a crucial step towards fulfilling the hospital’s mandate of capacity building and quality healthcare delivery in Ghana. He stressed that routine interactions with resident doctors would allow management to gain clearer insights into their operational needs and guide decision-making.
To directly support clinical training and patient care, Dr Adam revealed plans to procure two additional laparoscopic machines and ventilators.
He added that monitors will be installed across all operating theatres, allowing residents to view procedures in real time and improve their practical learning experience. Addressing welfare concerns, the Chief Executive disclosed that management is currently in talks with potential investors to secure long-term solutions to accommodation deficits facing staff.
During the discussions, resident doctors highlighted several challenges impacting their practical training, including limited hands-on opportunities, shortages of basic consumables, housing constraints, and the lack of a dedicated emergency surgical theatre. However, they acknowledged the hospital’s diverse case mix and the presence of experienced senior doctors as vital assets to their professional growth. The residents also advocated for a formal mentorship framework to ensure structured guidance throughout their residency.
On his part, the Head of the Department of Surgery, Dr Patrick Bankah, urged the junior doctors to maintain strong, professional relationships with senior colleagues to foster effective skills transfer and knowledge sharing.
The meeting was attended by key administrative leaders, including the Director of Medical Affairs, Dr Frank Owusu-Sekyere; Deputy Director of Medical Affairs, Dr Harry Akoto; Director of General Services, Madam Cynthia Fremah Gyekye; and Head of Public Relations, Mr Mustapha Salifu.
