New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis has expressed deep heartbreak and outrage following the tragic killing of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong.

The teenager, who relocated from Ghana to the United States with his family in search of better opportunities, was senselessly shot dead whilst on his way to school.

The tragic event has sent shockwaves through both the local community in New York and the broader Ghanaian diaspora.

In a passionate statement addressing the tragedy, Council Member Louis offered her condolences to the bereaved family while condemning the gun violence that claimed the young boy’s life.

“I am heartbroken and outraged by the senseless killing of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, who was robbed of his future while simply making his way to school,” Council Member Louis stated. “My deepest condolences are with his entire family as they confront an unimaginable loss. This family came to New York from Ghana in search of opportunity and a better future, and now they are facing the devastation of losing their child to gun violence.”

The tragedy has brought renewed scrutiny to the issue of school safety and bullying.

Reports emerging from the victim’s father indicate that Javits had suffered ongoing bullying prior to the attack and that school officials had been in contact with the family just days before the shooting took place.

Addressing these troubling allegations, Council Member Louis raised severe concerns regarding the speed and effectiveness with which school authorities handle reports of student harassment.

“Equally troubling are the reports from Javits’s father that his son had experienced bullying and that school officials had contacted him about the situation just days before the shooting,” she noted. “These reports raise serious questions about whether enough urgency is being exercised when students and families come forward seeking help. The lack of urgency in responding to bullying is a pervasive issue that touches communities across every Council district, and is not the first case involving students and families who felt their concerns were not being taken seriously or addressed with the urgency they deserved.”

Calling for systemic reform across the educational landscape, the Council Member emphasised that schools must adopt proactive and decisive measures to protect vulnerable children from harm before situations escalate into unmanageable tragedies.

“We need a school system that treats every report of bullying as a serious matter, conducts timely and thorough investigations, communicates meaningfully with families, and takes immediate steps to protect students from further harm or retaliation,” Louis added. “Our children deserve to feel safe in their classrooms, in their neighbourhoods, and on their way to school. We cannot continue to wait until a family is grieving a preventable tragedy before taking these concerns seriously.”

Investigations into the shooting remain ongoing as leaders and community members continue to call for justice and immediate institutional accountability.
