Ghana and Burkina Faso are set to deepen their commercial ties as both nations take steps toward a fresh bilateral trade agreement aimed at driving industrial cooperation, easing cross-border trade, and promoting local value addition.
The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, made the call during her Guest of Honour address at the opening of the 18th International Arts and Crafts Fair of Ouagadougou (SIAO 2026) on Friday, October 30, 2026.
She pointed to vast potential for joint ventures across key sectors, including handicrafts, agro-processing, shea, cotton, leather, and agricultural value chains.
Ghana is featured prominently as Guest of Honour at this year’s fair alongside Mali and Niger, putting on display a rich array of products sourced from across all 16 regions of the country.
Visitors to the Ghanaian pavilion can sample items ranging from authentic Kente, Adinkra, and fugu textiles to Bolgatanga baskets, traditional beads, pottery, handcrafted leather goods, and modern fashion designs.
Highlighting the economic strength underpinning relations between the two neighbours, Hon. Ofosu-Adjare revealed that formal trade between Ghana and Burkina Faso topped US$1 billion last year.
She emphasized that sustaining this momentum will require deliberate efforts to streamline border operations, harmonize product standards, and ensure smooth transit for goods across their shared borders.
