King Charles expresses horror over ‘shameful’ slave trade history at Commonwealth summit

November 3, 2026

King Charles has described the transatlantic slave trade as a shameful chapter of history that fills his heart with horror, delivering a deeply personal address to open the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.

Speaking directly to leaders gathered for the biennial summit of the 56-member association, the monarch offered careful and considered reflections on Britain’s historical legacy. While his powerful words resonated strongly across the assembly floor, the King stopped short of delivering a direct apology, navigating a sensitive diplomatic line that has long surrounded the monarchy’s historic ties to the era.

“The transatlantic trade in enslaved persons still casts a shadow over these islands and other members of our Commonwealth,” Charles said.

“As I have said before, that shameful chapter of history is one that fills my heart with horror and my soul with the most profound personal sorrow.”

“The more I have furthered my own understanding of the issues, through listening, learning and looking, the more committed I have become to finding ways for us to work in modern partnership to address the wrongs of the past with action for the future,” he said.

The opening ceremony also saw the King tackle broader global issues, framing them as the defining crisis of our time.

He drew urgent attention to the widespread devastation of climate change, the rise of brutal conflicts around the world, and the dizzying speed at which rapid technological advancements are transforming modern societies.

Political discussions at the summit have gathered momentum alongside the royal address, with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham addressing calls for historic accountability.

Burnham indicated that he remains open to a formal apology from the UK regarding its role in the slave trade, though he maintained that financial reparations are not the right answer for resolving historical grievances.

Instead, the British Prime Minister is expected to focus on structural economic support for developing nations during high-level talks.

His agenda includes presenting proposals for a debt reset designed to relieve Commonwealth countries struggling under the growing burden of high interest payments on international loans.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting brings together heads of state and delegates every two years to chart the future direction of the global partnership and tackle shared socio-economic challenges.
