A lecturer and educationist, Emmanuel Ziggah has blamed the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service for the level of indiscipline in our secondary schools.

He expressed concern that the lack of disciplinary measures in our schools has caused several students to misbehave.

He stated that preventing teachers and authorities from punishing students on grounds of human rights has created more troubles in our schools.

“I will lay the blame at the doorstep of the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service for the level of indiscipline in our schools. We claim that some of these punishments infringe on the human rights of the children in our schools. We claim the children have rights, and so the teachers cannot punish them. We have also tied the hands of these teachers, and so they cannot discipline our students. This is Ghana, but we want to apply a system used abroad to train our students. Without the cane, our students in Ghana will not be wise, or they will misbehave. I know this is debatable, but the environment where a white person is born is different from our environment, so we have a responsibility as leaders to maintain discipline in our schools.”

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he advised parents to also be responsible for their children.

“Some of the parents are irresponsible and do not place any value on their children. As a responsible parent, you have to train your children to be disciplined. You cannot leave that responsibility to only the teachers. The second thing we have to do is to review our code of conduct and allow the teachers to use reasonable force to discipline the students. Nobody is asking for teachers to kill students, but we have to use reasonable force to discipline them and stop these needless human rights claims.”
